
Asus Launches a Device That Turns Regular Bikes Into Electric Bikes
Turning a traditional bicycle into an electric bike no longer necessarily means buying a completely new bicycle.
Asus has introduced the Oxiis E250G1 Intelligent Bike Booster, a compact electric-assistance system designed to be attached to many conventional bicycles. The device can provide up to 50 kilometers of electric-assisted range, with a top speed of up to 32 km/h, depending on local regulations.
A Compact Electric Upgrade for Existing Bikes
The Oxiis E250G1 combines a removable battery with an electric motor that can be mounted around the bicycle's seat tube.
Instead of replacing the bicycle's chain or wheel hub, the system transfers power to the rear wheel through a pulley mechanism. This allows riders to add electric assistance while continuing to use their existing bicycle.
According to Asus, the system is compatible with city bikes, road bikes and folding bicycles, potentially offering an alternative to purchasing a dedicated electric bike.
The concept is somewhat similar to Yamaha's Booster Easy, but Asus' approach is designed as an add-on system for a bicycle the user already owns.
Three Riding Modes
The Oxiis E250G1 features a continuous power output of 250 watts, with peak power reaching 500 watts.
It also uses Adaptive Boost Technology, which can detect changes in road inclination and automatically adjust the level of electric assistance when climbing.
Riders can choose from three operating modes:
Eco: Designed to reduce energy consumption and maximise range.
Normal: Intended for everyday riding and commuting.
Sport: Provides additional assistance when tackling steep roads or demanding climbs.
The system uses a 158.4Wh removable battery, which can be taken off the bicycle and charged separately.
Asus claims the battery can provide around 50km of range in Eco mode, while the range can fall to approximately 10km in Sport mode, where more power is consumed.
A full charge reportedly takes around two hours, and the battery supports charging through a 100W USB Type-C Power Delivery charger.
Designed to Fit Many Bicycles
The complete system, including the battery, weighs approximately 3.7kg.
It can reportedly be installed on bicycles with wheel sizes ranging from 16 to 29 inches, as well as 700C wheels. The system also supports tyres up to around 60mm wide.
The seat-tube mounting clamp can accommodate diameters ranging from 25.4mm to 34.9mm, making the system compatible with a wide range of standard bicycle frames.
The device also includes integrated smart rear lights. These lights can detect braking and automatically illuminate to warn people travelling behind the cyclist.
Top Speed Can Reach 32 km/h
The Oxiis E250G1 can reach a maximum assisted speed of up to 32 km/h. However, the permitted speed may be limited to 25 km/h in some countries, depending on local regulations governing electrically assisted bicycles.
Asus has not yet announced the official price of the Oxiis E250G1 or confirmed when the device will become available in different markets.
For cyclists who already own a conventional bicycle, the system could offer an interesting way to add electric assistance without replacing the entire bike.
