ByteDance and Hollywood Group Sign Deal to Strengthen AI Copyright Protections
ByteDance has reached an agreement with the Motion Picture Association (MPA) to strengthen copyright protections across its artificial intelligence tools, following months of concerns from Hollywood over how AI-generated content could use protected intellectual property.
The agreement, announced on August 17, covers ByteDance's Seedance video-generation and Seedream image-generation models.
Agreement Follows Hollywood Copyright Concerns
The deal comes several months after the MPA sent ByteDance a cease-and-desist letter in February over its AI tools.
Hollywood studios, including Disney, had raised concerns that the technology could potentially generate videos and images featuring copyrighted movie and television characters, as well as celebrity likenesses, without proper authorization.
The concerns reflect a wider debate surrounding generative AI and the use of copyrighted material to create new content.
ByteDance Adds Stronger Safeguards
ByteDance said newer versions of its AI models include stronger protections designed to address intellectual-property concerns.
The company's AI technologies are available through several of its platforms and services, including TikTok, CapCut and Dreamina, giving the tools access to a large global user base.
The company and the MPA said they will continue working together as AI technology develops, with the goal of improving safeguards for copyrighted content.
A Growing Challenge for Hollywood
The agreement comes as entertainment companies around the world grapple with the rapid expansion of generative AI.
AI video and image-generation systems can increasingly produce realistic characters, scenes and visual styles from simple text prompts. That has created new creative opportunities while also raising questions about copyright ownership, licensing and the unauthorised use of actors' likenesses.
For Hollywood studios, stronger safeguards could help reduce the risk of copyrighted characters and other protected intellectual property being reproduced without permission.
For AI companies, however, developing effective protections without unnecessarily limiting legitimate creative uses remains a major challenge.

The ByteDance-MPA agreement highlights the growing importance of cooperation between technology companies and the entertainment industry as generative AI becomes more sophisticated.
