Across the UK's increasingly automated warehouses, fleets of compact autonomous robots are quietly changing the way online orders are processed. Instead of workers walking long distances to find products, robots can move entire shelves or pallets directly to designated workstations.

One of the companies driving this transformation is Geek+, a Chinese robotics manufacturer whose autonomous mobile robots are already being used by major UK retailers, including Tesco, Asda and Next.

As online shopping continues to place pressure on retailers to deliver orders faster and more efficiently, warehouse automation is becoming an increasingly important part of the retail supply chain.

At Geek+'s manufacturing facility in Hefei, China, robots are built and tested before being shipped to warehouses around the world.

The company's autonomous mobile robots are designed to travel underneath storage racks, lift them and transport them across a warehouse to workers who handle the next stage of the order.

This approach can reduce the amount of time employees spend walking between shelves while potentially increasing picking speeds and reducing mistakes.

Unlike traditional warehouse automation, these systems don't necessarily require extensive permanent infrastructure. Robots can navigate facilities using technologies such as QR-code floor markers, sensors and safety systems.

That flexibility makes them particularly attractive to retailers that need to modernise existing warehouses without completely rebuilding them.

Why the UK Is Becoming a Major Market

Britain has one of Europe's largest e-commerce and logistics industries, but the country has faced persistent productivity challenges.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has highlighted robotics and other advanced technologies as important tools for improving productivity, while noting that UK businesses have generally been slower to adopt robotics than some competitors.

For companies operating huge warehouses, automation offers a potential way to process larger volumes of orders while dealing with rising operational pressures and labour shortages.

The UK has reportedly become Geek+'s biggest European market, with its local partner MotionTech deploying more than 2,000 robots across 10 warehouse sites.

Automation and the Labour Question

The growth of warehouse robotics also raises an important question: Will robots replace workers or simply change the jobs they do?

Industry representatives argue that automation can help businesses cope with labour shortages and meet growing consumer demand.

Trade unions, however, want workers to have a stronger voice in how automation is introduced.

The Trades Union Congress has argued that robotics should be used to improve productivity and working conditions rather than simply reduce labour costs. It has also called for greater investment in retraining employees affected by technological change.

The debate is likely to become increasingly important as more retailers introduce AI-powered machines into their operations.

How China Became a Robotics Powerhouse

China's rise in robotics is closely connected to its broader industrial strategy.

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers are increasingly moving into robotics.

XPeng, for example, has expanded its ambitions beyond cars and is developing humanoid robots. The company is among a growing group of Chinese technology firms betting that robotics could eventually become a major global industry.

The strategy has parallels with China's rapid expansion in electric vehicles, where manufacturers benefited from extensive domestic supply chains and fast product development.

The US, meanwhile, has taken steps to restrict certain advanced foreign-made robotics imports over national-security concerns, highlighting the growing geopolitical competition surrounding the technology.

The Next Step: Fully Automated Warehouses

Today's warehouse robots mainly focus on transporting goods. But companies such as Geek+ are aiming for something much more ambitious: end-to-end automation.

That could eventually include picking products, handling items and packing orders with minimal human intervention.

The technology is already moving beyond simple wheeled machines. Chinese companies such as AgiBot and Unitree are developing humanoid robots designed to perform tasks traditionally carried out by people.

However, humanoid robots still face significant technical and economic challenges.

Do Warehouses Really Need Humanoid Robots?

A humanoid shape could eventually be useful because factories, warehouses, hospitals and offices have largely been designed around human workers.

A robot with a human-like body could potentially operate in existing environments without requiring companies to redesign every workplace.

But today's specialised warehouse robots can already perform specific tasks efficiently. That raises an important question about whether humanoid robots offer enough additional value to justify their greater complexity and cost.

For now, experts generally see humanoids as complementary to existing automation rather than an immediate replacement for specialised machines.
