UK Job Vacancies Hit Five-Year Low as Employers Cut Back on Hiring
The UK labour market is showing further signs of slowing, with the number of available job vacancies falling to its lowest level in five years, according to new official figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The latest data, covering the three months to June 2026, showed that there were 18,000 fewer vacancies than a year earlier. The number of available positions has not been this low since April 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Small Businesses Scale Back Recruitment
The decline has been particularly noticeable among smaller businesses.
According to the ONS, companies with between one and nine employees recorded the largest reduction, cutting around 8,000 vacancies. Officials said some small employers have been delaying recruitment or choosing not to replace workers who have left, citing higher employment and operating costs.
The biggest falls in vacancies were recorded in professional, scientific and technical activities, as well as human health and social work.
A Warning Sign for the UK Economy
The latest figures add to growing concerns about the strength of the UK's labour market. Job vacancies have now fallen to around 707,000, while the unemployment rate remained at 4.9% in the latest three-month period.
Economists are closely watching the figures because weaker hiring can affect household incomes, consumer confidence and overall economic growth.
Private-sector wage growth has also slowed, with regular earnings increasing by around 2.8% year-on-year, according to the latest data.
What Comes Next for UK Workers?
The latest figures suggest that employers remain cautious about expanding their workforces, particularly as businesses continue to face pressure from labour and operating costs.
While the data does not necessarily point to a sharp deterioration in employment, the continued decline in vacancies is an important warning sign for the UK economy and could make competition for new jobs tougher in the months ahead.
