Michael Wright Dies at 70
Michael Wright, the actor remembered for powerful performances in The Five Heartbeats and Sugar Hill, has died at the age of 70.
According to reports, Wright died Wednesday in Los Angeles from heart failure and complications related to Marchiafava-Bignami disease, a rare neurological disorder.
His wife, Susan, shared the news on social media, describing his death as an enormous and deeply personal loss and remembering the lasting impact of his work and his love on those closest to him.
A Memorable Role in ‘The Five Heartbeats’
Wright became widely recognized for playing Eddie King Jr., the lead vocalist of the fictional R&B group in Robert Townsend’s 1991 musical drama The Five Heartbeats.
His performance portrayed the pressures of fame and the personal struggles that can accompany success, with his character battling drug and alcohol addiction.
The film also starred Robert Townsend, Tico Wells, Leon and Harry J. Lennix and has remained a beloved title among fans of classic Black cinema.
From ‘Sugar Hill’ to ‘Oz’
Wright also delivered a memorable performance in the 1994 crime drama Sugar Hill, playing Raynathan Skuggs, the brother of Wesley Snipes’ character.
His television career was equally notable. He portrayed Resistance fighter Elias Taylor in the popular 1980s series V and later appeared as troubled inmate Omar White in HBO’s acclaimed prison drama Oz.
Wright appeared in 22 episodes of Oz across three seasons between 2001 and 2003.
A Career Spanning Decades
Born in New York City on April 30, 1956, Wright began his acting journey through a work-study program at the Lee Strasberg Institute.
His first film appearance came in 1979 when he played Clinton in The Wanderers. He later appeared in Robert Altman’s Streamers and went on to build a career across film and television.
His credits included The Principal, Money Talks, Piñero, The Interpreter and Dope King, along with television appearances in Miami Vice, New York Undercover and Black Lightning.
