Intermittent fasting has become a major trend in nutrition, with millions of people using different versions of the diet in the hope of losing weight, improving their health and potentially reducing the risk of disease.
But despite its popularity, scientists are still debating how much of the promised benefit is actually supported by evidence.
Some studies suggest intermittent fasting can be as effective as traditional calorie-restricted diets, while others have found little additional benefit. There have even been studies raising concerns about possible health risks.
So, has intermittent fasting been oversold?
Researchers say the answer may depend partly on a surprisingly basic problem: scientists often do not know exactly what people are eating.
What Is Intermittent Fasting?
Intermittent fasting generally involves limiting when a person eats rather than focusing only on what they eat.

Why Is Nutrition Research So Difficult?

In laboratory experiments, researchers can control exactly what an animal consumes. Humans, however, leave the research facility and return to their normal lives.
Scientists may ask participants to keep food diaries or remember what they have eaten, but those methods are far from perfect.

Researchers estimate that a significant proportion of people underreport how much they eat.

Even Researchers Can Struggle to Track Food Intake
The problem is not necessarily dishonesty.
Human memory simply isn't very reliable when it comes to recording everything consumed during an entire day.
Portion sizes can also vary significantly, while nutritional databases often provide average values rather than precise information about individual products.
This means two people could report eating the same meal while actually consuming very different amounts of calories and nutrients.
For researchers, that creates a major obstacle when trying to compare different diets.
Could Technology Finally Provide Better Answers?
Scientists are now experimenting with technology that could reduce their reliance on food diaries.
Some research projects use cameras to automatically record what people eat. Other devices are being developed to detect chewing, monitor eating behaviour or even measure nutrients.
Examples include wearable devices, smart utensils and experimental sensors attached to teeth.
Blood and urine tests may also provide useful information by showing how the body is processing nutrients.
None of these technologies is perfect on its own, but researchers believe combining several methods could eventually provide a much more accurate picture of what people consume.
That could allow scientists to conduct studies in everyday life that are closer to the highly controlled experiments currently possible only in research facilities.
Intermittent Fasting Isn't Necessarily a Magic Solution
The growing body of evidence suggests a more balanced picture than some of the claims circulating online.
Intermittent fasting can help people lose weight and may improve certain metabolic health markers.
But there is currently little evidence that it is a magical diet capable of delivering all the dramatic health benefits sometimes attributed to it.
Much of the uncertainty comes from the difficulty of conducting high-quality nutrition research, rather than from intermittent fasting alone.
Researchers also point out that physical activity, sleep, calorie intake and food quality can all influence health outcomes and need to be considered when studying fasting.
Social Media Adds to the Confusion
Nutrition influencers have played a major role in popularising intermittent fasting, but researchers warn that some online claims go far beyond what scientific evidence can currently support.
Results from studies involving mice are sometimes presented as though they automatically apply to humans, while individual success stories can create the impression that the diet works in exactly the same way for everyone.
Scientists say better research is needed before making strong claims about whether intermittent fasting provides benefits beyond those achieved through other forms of calorie reduction.
The Bottom Line
Intermittent fasting appears to be a legitimate approach to weight management, but its wider health benefits remain uncertain.
The most promising development may not be another fasting schedule, but better technology that allows researchers to accurately measure what people eat in their everyday lives.
Until then, experts say the evidence should be viewed carefully, particularly when impressive claims come from social media rather than well-controlled human studies.
